Joinery

Traditionally, joinery refers to the ‘joining’ of wood together without the use of mechanical adhesives or fastenings to create a larger structure. Most joinery pieces are unique and constructed to their own needs, bringing a beautiful elegance to any home or outdoor space. Although often more expensive than your typically constructed unit, joinery offers a reliable structure that’s a skilled and beneficial practice; especially for external furniture that’s impacted by the weather.

At Nash Furniture and Joinery we strive to use traditional joinery techniques with a modern twist, to enhance the capabilities of our products across appearance and structure. Joinery is at the epicenter of our services, and is a key consideration for how we design most of our items.

We can accommodate to most joinery needs, from beautiful doors to freestanding garden furniture that will last a lifetime. We are always conscious of material choices when it comes to our joinery projects to best reflect budgets, sustainability and intended purpose. Every piece will appropriately embody your requirements, and where necessary we will suggest various material and finishing options to ensure you get the best life out of your product.

Why not take a look at some of our joinery across various projects and see if we can catch your eye…

Dovetail Joints

Dovetail joints are one of the most popular joints used across multiple bespoke projects due to their decorative nature. These particular joints were used on a wine cabinet to give a sense of elegance. The construction of this joint is resilient against timber movement, leading to a longer life for the bespoke unit. Dovetails frequently appear on freestanding cabinets, wooden units and occasionally drawer boxes.

Doweled Mortice and Tenon Joints

Take a look at our Doweled Mortice and Tenon Joints which allow for a stunning contrast between the straight grain and end grain of the timber. Our goal with this beautiful garden gate was to show off the joinery. Not only does this make the item stand out in it’s uniqueness, but the dowls lock the joint, meaning little to no glue was required! This type of joinery is visual more accessible compared to other variations. Truly an ideal choice for sophisticated items, such as this garden gates, to add that extra special detail.

“The dowels are my favourite feature. It’s a small thing that makes my gate look one of a kind.”

Iroko Garden Bench

This Garden Bench is one of the most elegant and notable pieces NFJ has produced to date. It was created during our founder, Aaron’s, time apprenticing at The Royal Household to commemorate Queen Elizabeth 2nd Platinum Jubilee.

The design was inspired from miniature models within the Queen’s Dolls House, as seen in Windsor castle. The architect that designed this particular style of bench was known as Sir Edward Lutyens; a famous architect from the 19th century.

Within the benches construction, we used a variety of different styles of mortice and tenon joints to ensure a dedicated resilience to the structure. Complex curves that run across the frame of the bench create a beautiful silhouette that encapsulates the effect the original miniature grew famous for.

Iroko is a type of timber that’s is perfect for external joinery, due to the natural oils it contains. Finished with teak oil, to create a breathable, water-resistant finish, the end result is a flawless addition to Sir Lutyens’s original work.

Similar to our Bespoke offerings, Joinery is categorised within three select services, known as fit for purpose, modern, and traditional. All of these go through our rigorous 3-phase process, which you can read more about here.
